2008-05-08 Pr Rel: CARA DEAD
 May 8, 2008
PRESS RELEASE
KS LEGISLATURE ADJOURNS WITHOUT CARA DESPITE DEDICATED LEGISLATORS AND PUBLIC SUPPORT - FOCUS NOW TURNS TO CAMPAIGNS
Attribute to KFL Executive Director, Mary Kay Culp 913-406-4446
"The Kansas legislature has adjourned without abortion reform, due to Democrat Gov. Kathleen Sebelius and Republican Senate president Steve Morris.
"The governor vetoed the Comprehensive Abortion Reform Act, 'CARA', and when the legislature returned April 30, Senator Morris undermined the 27 votes secured for the override vote. Then,on May 7, Morris reneged on the agreement to give a vote to a revised CARA that would have overcome the objections Sebelius stated in her veto message.
"Both versions of CARA would have prevented coerced abortions, given women an opportunity to see their baby on ultrasound, and hear their heartbeat, and provided key referrals for medically-challenged pregnancies.
"Many dedicated legislators worked hard to get CARA passed, only to be cheated of veto override; and many constituents called the capitol to urge passage, override and a vote on a revised version. We want to especially honor the efforts of Rep. Lance Kinzer and Senator Tim Huelskamp in those endeavors.
"Kansas women, children and families need CARA, and KFL's Political Action Committee (PAC) will be working hard to pick up additional pro-life seats in the House and Senate needed to secure veto override."
